Key Factors to Consider When Choosing Your Study Abroad Destination

Carefully consider each of the following factors to ensure they align with your academic goals. We have also included important personal preferences that should influence your decision.

1. ACADEMIC PROGRAM OF INTEREST

The program you choose to study is one of the most important factors when selecting a study abroad destination

Identify the academic strengths and areas where you'd like to improve. Online research can provide valuable insights. You may also want to schedule a free consultation to guide you through this process.

2. DURATION OF THE PROGRAM

You have a range of options from short Taster Classes, a semester abroad, to completing an entire degree overseas. While it's not mandatory to spend an entire year abroad, the longer you stay, the more immersed you'll become in the local culture.

Visit our Study Programs page for detailed information about program lengths and explore Bachelor's and Master's study opportunities worldwide.

3. SCOPE OF THE PROGRAM

What industries or career paths are you aiming for after your studies? It’s essential to research whether your chosen study abroad destination offers specialisations in your field of interest.

Some countries may offer unique opportunities for practical applications. For example, engineering skills might be in high demand in developing nations, while healthcare qualifications could be an asset in various regions.

4. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Each country has its own set of requirements for international students, so be sure you can meet them to ensure a smooth application process.

Make sure your academic qualifications align with your destination’s entry standards. Some universities may also require proof of English proficiency, so check if you'll need to take an additional test.

5. COST CONSIDERATIONS

Beyond tuition fees, remember to budget for living expenses such as accommodation, food, emergency costs, and leisure activities.

6. LANGUAGE

Learning a new language can be an enriching part of your experience, even if it's not a requirement. Being able to communicate with locals can deepen your understanding of the culture and broaden your worldview.

Consider starting language practice early by watching foreign TV shows, reading books in the local dialect, or using language learning apps.

7. CLIMATE

Your health and well-being should play a role in your decision. Are you sensitive to hot or cold weather? Will the climate affect your ability to study?

If you’re comfortable with a different climate than your home country, you’ll have a broader range of destinations to choose from. Pack accordingly with light clothes for warmer climates or coats for colder regions.

8. CUISINE

Dietary needs are another practical factor. Do you have food allergies, or are you vegan? It’s important to ensure your study destination offers food that aligns with your dietary requirements.

While the idea of trying new cuisines is exciting, having access to healthy and suitable meals is essential to your well-being during your studies. Make sure your host country provides enough variety and accessibility.
